Announcing the LittleBigPlanet speedrunning contest! The contest will take place in the original LittleBigPlanet's story mode. 

The Contest

For the contest, me and a few others had voted for 5 levels from all the main levels in the story mode that we thought would be fitting levels for a speedrunning contest. Here are the levels:

Get A Grip
Skate to Victory
Boom Town
Endurance Dojo
Elephant Temple

Your mission is to speedrun all of the 5 levels. We'll be having a points-based system for the top times in each level. The fastest time in each level gets 10 points, second fastest gets 9 points and so on. You have to do at least one run of every level, but only your top 3 rankings will count, so you can choose to focus on your 3 favorite levels. Your rankings in the other 2 levels will be counted if a tiebreaker is necessary. The player with the most points at the end of the contest will win the contest.

Rules

1. Run needs to be video recorded. Quality just needs to be reasonable enough to confirm that you didn't cheat/compare with other times, meaning you can record the screen with a phone or camera if you don't have a capture card. Recording the run's audio is also required.

2. Create mode glitches, like the overlord glitch or god glitch, are not allowed. However, ANY sequence breaks or glitches performed exclusively in the levels themselves are 100% legal.

3. Competitors will be ranked on a points-based system. Players with the fastest time in a level will get 10 points, 2nd fastest time will get 9 points, 3rd fastest will get 8, etc. You have to do at least one run of every level, but only your top 3 rankings will count. If there is a tie, the 4th and/or 5th best rankings for each tied player will be used.

4. We needed some way to prove that all competition entries are performed after the start of the competition (otherwise a WR holder could just submit their runs for a free win). So, to prove that your run is a competition entry, after completing the level, perform this top secret proof of entry: place the "Letter E" sticker on the scoreboard. You can heart the sticker beforehand for easy access, so you don't run out of time looking for the sticker at the end of the level. If you don't do this, the run won't be counted.


Not sure how likely this is in practice, but in true speedrunning spirit, you're encouraged to share your strategies with your competetors. Speedrunning is all about community collaboration, so even if you want to beat everyone, it's good to share how you're getting your times!

So please keep posting your latest speedruns of the levels here at this thread so everybody can keep up how others are making progress!

How to get the "Letter E" sticker

There are two ways, you can get the "Letter E" sticker, by completing the Elastic tool tutorial in create mode or you can use a cheat code in the credits screen (found from Main menu settings) to skip all the tutorials in the create mode and get all the prizes from the tutorials. Enter the controller code: Down, Up, L1, L2, R2, R1, Triangle, X. The code needs to be entered fast. If you fail the inputs at any time, exit the credits screen and re-enter to try again.

Hey ppj! I love your LBP speedrunning guides! This looks like a pretty interesting contest since it's based on playing rather than creating. Not sure if I'll enter or not, but I look forward to other entries either way.

One thing confuses me about the instructions. If we're only required to run/record three levels, what happens if there's a necessary tiebreaker but none of the tied people ran the remaining two levels?

But what about the varying lengths of levels? For example, Get a Grip is inherently shorter than Elephant Temple.  Would Get a Grip be counted instead of Elephant Temple just because the time is shorter or will it be judged proportionally?

What's up? It's been silent here at this thread, so I thought I could just in case clarify the rule of submitting your speedruns, you are allowed to post as many speedruns here at this thread as you like, for example, if you have recorded speedruns for some of the levels, but plan to imporve them, you can send your current best times for the levels here and if you beat them at some point, you can send your new records here as well. There are no limits here  

Also, it would be cool to know who all are in the contest, say hi if you are entering or planning on it!

I definitely intend on entering.  It would be fun to put some of your speedrunning guides to practice I'd love to fulfill my aspiration for one of those shiny crowns.  Having the crown costume would actually be super useful for an important character in a future level of mine. I'm deep into working on a level right now, though, so I probably won't get on LBP1 to start my runs until a few weeks from now.  We have until July 31st, right? That should be plenty of time.  Who knows, maybe with some luck I'll win! Either way, I'm very interested in the contest, even if there's a small amount of entries.

Hey! Just would like to know if it's still possible to enter the contest, and if so, then I'm totally in!

I aim to finally finish my several-month-long level sometime this week, so then I can take a break from creating and start attempting speedruns!

Where is the letter E sticker located at? I have 100% all levels and aced all of them. Still can't find the sticker!

It should be in the "Text" category of stickers, the last category on the list, alongside the rest of the alphabet.

Maybe in one of the tutorials...

Got on LBP1 today and practiced the levels. I've never speedran LBP or any other game for that matter, so it was interesting to practice around in levels and slowly learn the ropes. Struggled with Endurance Dojo and Elephant Temple, but I'm happy so far with what I pulled off in the other three, at least for a rookie.

Perhaps, although I can't think of any other levels that have a long enough slope to preform a jump like this.

Yeah, I agree. The Big Jump is very cool, but very unreliable. It seems like a very rare thing to do. The amount of iterations of this part of the level is very high. The speeds vary, the placements of jumps change, I wouldn't try and go for this in a run. It would be better to practice the RCJ on the bottom of the slope in my opinion.

Yeah, that jump seems like one that needs alot of vertical speed to happen and a very precise landing to a corner in a slope. And yeah, this shouldn't probably be attempted really, the rcj is more reliable.

Having trouble with getting the RCJ in Get a Grip consistently. I don't want one part to choke up my whole run. Any tips?

I have the same problem as Toastrz. The RCJ at the end of the ramp is really difficult for me. I think I've only gotten it once. At the moment I just manage to jump high enough then Retry to get up. This wastes a lot of time. Get A Grip won't be my best time, so i might just focus on the other levels, as they have less RNG jumps. Thanks for the tutorial anyway.

I'm gonna publish my run of Skate To Victory tomorrow. Though I had a faster windmill fling than Krosso, I goofed the castle inside, skipping the LCJ and messing up the boot fling, I fell behind his run a second or so. Once I've ordered my new PS3 (As my old one broke 3 days ago) I'll continue the runs, moving onto Endurance and Elephant. I'm gonna book on those 3, and maybe Boom Town, and just try and get a decent time on Get A Grip.

Timing starts around when the entrance door opens and ends when you hit the scoreboard. There's actually a loading badge that pops up at the left bottom corner on the frame when you hit the scoreboard to know the exact time when to end the time.

I think people may have been using slightly different timing methods, but it's not a big deal. I'll be correcting peoples times if they are incorrect and if times get tied with the second, I will be timing which one was actually faster.

Alright, I'll try.  I managed to get a "perfect" run of both Get a Grip and Skate to Victory, but wasn't recording either times, unfortunately.  Let's hope I can replicate that!

Alright, I'll try.  I managed to get a "perfect" run of both Get a Grip and Skate to Victory, but wasn't recording either times, unfortunately.  Let's hope I can replicate that!


I always have that problem. I'll have a really good run, but I won't be recording Seeing as I have to record with a phone, I can't just leave a capture card running and look back at the footage. Oh well, let's hope luck is on our sides in this competition!

Sorry to inform you but those who are really desperate for a crown can actually cheat without you even noticing it. All they basically need to do is to speed up their already recorded results some percentages. The human eye wont notice these changes unless they exceed a certain percentage. This can buy them several seconds depending on how much they are willing to risk getting caught. And if you are really skilled in manipulating video material, you can edit the raw video with every perfect sequence of the run (and these sequences was recorded separately) and melt them together seamlessly so you can't notice anything unless you have programs designed for it. The results is the fastest possible run with zero errors.

I personally think that this whole idea is flawed. I like the contest, don't get me wrong but there's so many variables to consider, like what if the two top runs only differs by nanoseconds? It's also unfair for those who want to participate but don't have any way of recording their gameplay. Well I just wanted to get that out. Otherwise I wish everyone who participates good luck and may the fastest win, in a fair way.

I completely understand the concern, blacksackman. However, I don't think there's anyone here that stupid / desperate enough to win the crown. Personally, I've been chasing the crown for a few years now, and I'm literally buying a new PS3 / repairing my PS3 now to get it. Of course that's not the only reason, but I really do want to partake in this contest. I think all of the contestants here are honest, fair people, who actually want to compete with each other. One or two of the people here I've met in-game, and have chatted to, and they all seem like great people. I think we all here actually want to win the crown off skill, and determination, not by cheating. I'm not sure if there are people here that are skilled enough to edit perfect parts with each other to create a flawless run. You could easily listen out for any changes in music (as audio is required) and compare them with other runs to see how similar the movement is.

I think the contest is a great idea. After the run of LBP by RabidJellyfish in SGDQ a few days ago, I feel like a spark has been ignited to speedrun this game, for fun or for this contest! I thought I couldn't enter this contest because I have no means of recording it, but because I actually wanted to compete with community members and have fun while doing so, my recording setup is literally a pile of PS3 games with my phone recording on top, and the quality is till good. People like Im-Boss_17 are simply using their phone stood upright towards the screen for their runs. It's not in the most perfect position but the requirements are met. If you can't record your gameplay, well, tough luck. Not all contests have to be open for everyone. Not all contests can be open for everyone. Some people aren't good at speedrunning, some people aren't good at creating, some people aren't good at making costumes, or platformers, or levels in general. It is impossible to cater to every single person through contests. That's like complaining "It's unfair for people in wheelchairs because they can't participate in the 100m sprint race!". The race is meant for people who can run. Sorry. Go look for a contest that caters to people in wheelchairs.

Of course the contest is fine, what I think is flawed is how different each entry can be in terms of various of different variables not even worth mentioning here, as they go into extreme detail. That's a funny example you mentioned there sackboy but I don't really think that scenario applies for this case. In general, LBP contests are often really easy to enter and you basically have everything in-game required to fulfill the different contest requirements and the forums acts as a base where you can upload your created entry. In this case you must have more technical awareness than usual and this limits the overall available participants. But, in a nutshell, everything is flawed. Nothing can be perfect and not all contests are open for everyone as you said. The most important point in my post was to ensure that the contest host knows about potential cheating methods. Enough said about this, let's not have this discussion take any more place here. The post reasons has been clarified and any other personal opinions mentioned by me are not important for the overall progress of this contest.

Also this is a message for everyone else too about the starting of the recording. So far the speedruns have been started at an acceptable time, some could have been started a little earlier, Svante's speedrun is at the very line, but I'm going to accept it. For the coming recordings, don't start the recording on the moment when sackboy spawns, start the recording before the spawning happens so the full speedrun of the level gets recorded. Thanks!

After practicing the first level for a few hours, I have come to the conclusion that I don't really have the space to record my runs without a capture card. Good luck to everyone still in it.

It is quite hard to record without a GC, I feel you. I had to delete all of my videos and photos on my phone to be able to record for a while, which I don't really mind, I've made backups. My advice would be just to practice for an hour or so, then record for like 30 minutes, then practice again, and repeat, if you have the time.

Hi! A way how you could get the runs to fit would be stopping the recording after every attempt in a level and delete every recording that didn't succeed. That should work

I thought I could post this here as a reminder for everyone, even though there's still a lot of time left, but just so you wont forget: Remember to do a speedrun of all the 5 levels to be qualified for the contest, only your top 3 placements in the levels will count, but the rest 2 levels will be used incase of a tie in points.

This contest has been an absolute blast. I never thought I'd get this far in the contest. I'm extremly proud of myself for being able to get almost WR runs after just a month or so of practicing. It's crazy to me. I want to thank a few people and congratulate some too!

ppj and rbd, your guides have made me consider this to be a speedgame ever since I first saw that trailer.
I tried the gardens levels and it was a blast. The later skips and techs seemed completely ludicrous, but then this contest came along.

This contest made me get up and learn all the levels, and understand lbp and speedrunning as a whole to a much greater degree. Thank you both so much for turning a childhood memory into a competitive, challenging, fun part of gaming.

I gave up towards the end of the contest because it was becoming discouraging, and setup issues certainly didn't help. I was beginning to grow frustrated and tired of the game, so I thought it would be best if I moved on to learning full lbp runs rather than a few IL's.

After understanding priorities of movement, not dying, and skips, I got a sub 1:10 run and I'm only getting better.

The contest has made me understand what speedrunning is: practice, passion, and proficiency.
